Agricultural Standards Revision
Fair Trade USA’s top priority has always been helping build strong, sustainable supply chains that benefit and protect farmers and workers.
To help achieve this, the organization’s Agricultural Production Standards (APS) are updated periodically according to best practices set forth by ISEAL. In 2025, Fair Trade USA underwent a scheduled revision of the standard.
The Agricultural Production Standard’s Dynamic Transformation
The updated Agricultural Production Standard offers more flexibility and enablement to producers that focus on real, lived experiences and the shifting circumstances that they face. It moves from pure compliance into an assurance model that enables positive outcomes intended to help unlock more insights and intelligence to address core needs. This ultimately means stronger partnerships and a more resilient future centered on producer-led solutions.
Key Innovations of APS 2.0
Important new elements of the initiative include:
- Tailored Approach: No longer one-size-fits-all, the new standard adapts to diverse realities found within various agricultural communities.
- Outcome-focused: The emphasis is on tangible results and real-world applications driven by real-time data and insights.
- Inter-Operable: To reduce complexity and the cost burden of producers who are typically multi-certified, the new standard recognizes and accepts requirements that have already been met through other programs.
- Updated Data Tracking and Reporting: Standards align with industry-recognized metrics such as Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) so that producer data speaks the same language as other sustainability initiatives for seamless collaboration.
- Simplicity, Clarity, Precision: Clear expectations are delivered through simplified language and targeted requirements.
- Regenerative Agriculture & Producer Leadership: Standards will continue to recognize and uplift the unique expertise of producers in leading climate solutions while simultaneously upholding strong standards on regenerative agriculture and nature-positive practices.
