The climate crisis is a human crisis. That’s why environmental action is a key component of Fair Trade standards—and why empowering people to protect the planet is at the core of our model. Fair Trade USA™ recognizes that nobody understands how to protect land better than the communities that call it home. Our standards help empower communities to use their local knowledge and expertise to carry out meaningful and lasting environmental action.  

So, how do Fair Trade standards help protect the planet? Our standards cover 100+ compliance criteria related to social and environmental sustainability. The criteria sets the standards—but the real work is done by producers who are experts in stewarding their land and protecting local ecosystems. Community Development Funds help support producer-led projects that center environmental action while furthering education on climate and sustainability.
