Fair Trade USA®, the leading certifier of fair trade products in North America, is honoring its 1,250+ partners’ commitments to fair trade certification and the positive impact they bring to farmers and workers across the world. By encouraging conscious consumers to sign and share a pledge to “seek the seal” on an array of products, Fair Trade USA aims to increase this impact and increase awareness for the array of products that can be Fair Trade Certified™, such as apparel and home goods, coconut, seafood, produce and flowers, and more.
The nonprofit and its partner brands will also hold an array of virtual educational events throughout the month of October.
The Fair Trade Certified seal represents thousands of products that improve millions of lives and protect land and waterways in 45 countries and counting. Products that carry the Fair Trade Certified seal are made in accordance with high standards, promoting safe working conditions, the elimination of harmful chemicals, and sustainable livelihoods for businesses and communities. Farmers, garment workers, and fishers are essential workers too, and these unsung heroes keep our goods moving when the rest of the world is at a standstill — often risking their own lives due to circumstance. Raising their standards means they can be more resilient in these trying times.
When you purchase Fair Trade Certified products, your dollars reach more than 975,000 farmers and workers as they grapple with unforeseen challenges during the pandemic. There are more than 40,000 Fair Trade Certified products on the market from national retailers and independent brands. Purchases of these goods have sent $740 million to farmers and workers since 1998. Anyone can be a fair trade advocate for a more just world simply by purchasing certified products.
“People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.” – Dalai Lama XIV
A testament to individual purchasing habits affecting collective action was the recent vote by the Los Angeles City Council to become a “Fair Trade City,” making LA the largest Fair Trade City in North America and the 4th largest in the world.
